Carbapenemase-producing organisms outbreak impacting 6 West inpatient unit; closed to visitors, students and volunteers
Officials at Guelph General Hospital are on high alert after an outbreak has been declared in one of its units.
According to a news release, a carbapenemase-producing organisms outbreak was declared on the 6 West inpatient unit on Tuesday.
At least two patients have the bacteria.
Carbapenemase-producing organisms, or CPO, is said to be a group of germs “resistant to many different types of antibiotics and very contagious.”
The hospital adds while the bacteria doesn’t always cause symptoms, it can lead to infections like pneumonia.
The unit is closed to visitors, students and volunteers to avoid further spread.
Additional cleaning is also ongoing in high touch, high traffic areas.
Operations in other areas of the hospital are continuing as normal.
