AFL legend Mick Malthouse has been stabbed with a screwdriver after he confronted intruders who had broken into his East Melbourne home overnight.

Police said the former Collingwood great chased the intruders into a nearby laneway, where he was assaulted about 12.30am on Thursday. The attackers fled on foot.

Malthouse, 72, sustained minor injuries but declined medical treatment.

His daughter, Christie Malthouse, said her father had been stabbed in the chest with what he thought was a screwdriver and hit across the arm with a crowbar after he chased three intruders down an alley.

“There were actually three intruders and Dad woke to the sound … of them trying to get in the door,” she said.

“He managed to chase them out, and then he was confronted by them, and they had weapons and so he was hit, and he was stabbed. But thankfully, he believes it was a screwdriver, not a knife, and he deflected it, so it wasn’t too deep, and he managed to fight them off.

“And then they got out and he chased them a bit, but he was in bare feet and couldn’t continue to chase them.

“He was hit with a crowbar across his arm. He did manage to get the crowbar off them.”
