A 12-year-old boy from Toronto has been charged with attempted murder after a man was shot in Markham last month, York Regional Police said.

Officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds when they responded to reports of a shooting near McCowan Road and 14th Avenue on Aug. 14, police said in a news release Wednesday. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect, 12, was taken into custody on Tuesday and charged with attempted murder, along with discharging a firearm with intent, possession of property obtained by crime and other offences.

At the time of the incident, the youth had been out on bail for unrelated violent offences, police said. It’s not the first time someone released on bail has been allegedly involved in serious crimes, said police Chief Jim MacSween in the release.

“We must advocate for legislative measures which ensure violent and repeat offenders are kept off the streets, while also focusing on rehabilitating our youth, to ensure public safety, to protect our officers and to maintain public confidence,” MacSween said.
