RCMP say a collision involving three vehicles in “extremely dangerous conditions” was the cause of Thursday’s lengthy Highway 3 closure north of Fort Providence.
The road closure in the incident’s aftermath began before 10am and lasted until 6pm. Two commercial vehicles and a passenger vehicle were involved but nobody was hurt, police said.
Drivers on the highway that morning had described “wild” conditions as fog and wildfire smoke mixed to remove almost all visibility.
The NWT government is now keeping the highway closed overnight, from midnight until at least 8am each day, in a bid to avoid vehicles moving through similar conditions.
Friday’s overnight closure lasted until 10am, with Highway 3 now open, and similar closures are expected until at least Tuesday.
“On the morning of September 4, Fort Providence detachment received a report of a collision on Highway 3 north of the community,” RCMP told Cabin Radio by email on Friday.
“Officers attended to find two commercial vehicles and a passenger vehicle had been involved in a collision, however no injuries were reported. Visibility was near-zero, creating extremely dangerous conditions.
“This investigation remains ongoing with no charges laid at this time.”
The Department of Infrastructure has also been approached for comment.
