HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Acting Gov. Sylvia Luke issued Friday a proclamation declaring a state of emergency across Hawaii due to the potential impacts of Kiko, which was a Category 4 hurricane as of Friday afternoon.
The proclamation activates emergency measures and resources, the Hawaii National Guard, and the Major Disaster Fund.
Several state laws are also temporarily suspended to expedite emergency response and recovery.
The emergency period remains active until Sept. 19 unless it is otherwise extended or terminated.
As of Friday, Kiko is forecast to approach the islands as a tropical storm early next week. It is expected to bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, and high surf affecting portions of the state as early as next Monday.
“To ensure the safety and preparedness of our communities, the state and counties will stand ready to mobilize resources to clear debris, secure infrastructure, and respond quickly to any possible damage caused by the storm,” said Luke.
