A Letterkenny Councillor is making the call for traffic wardens and/or gardaí to be considered as measures to relieve traffic jams in the town.

Councillor Tomás Seán Devine says that, until major infrastructure projects are in place, personnel are needed to direct rush hour traffic.

The 100% Redress Party councillor will raise a motion with the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District this Tuesday seeking support for his call.

“We have several congested areas at certain times of the day (and) any help trying to sort this would go along way (in) helping those constantly stuck in traffic,” Cllr Devine said.

“If we’re being honest with the public, the bridges and relief roads around Letterkenny are at least 8/10 years away.

“Local businesses and shops will never survive if this traffic congestion continues.”

Cllr Devine’s suggestion echoes an operation in 2019 when Gardaí were drafted in to manage evening traffic in the Cathedral Town. The approach was hailed as a success.

The motion will be discussed at Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD, where a response will also be supplied by Donegal County Council.

Mayor of Letterkenny-Milford Ciaran Brogan will also propose a Special Roads Workshop to discuss the whole area of traffic calming measures which he says are needed urgently within the Municipal District.

The public meeting was called in the Oldtown area of Letterkenny on Wednesday to protest traffic issues and demand action on proposed relief roads.

Organiser Mary T Sweeney of Aontú urged people to come together and sign a petition on issues that need to be addressed.

Cllr Devine was one of the speakers at the event, where he said: “Since I came to Letterkenny 21 years ago, traffic has been shambolic.”
