Mr Burns, who was in his 40s, was found dead at a property in Cusher Green in Mountnorris shortly after 11.30 on Thursday morning.
He had serious head and facial injuries, the police have said.
Originally from Warrenpoint, it is understood Mr Burns had been living in the property for a number of years.
The 39-year-old suspect was arrested as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr Burns’ death.
Today, the alleged killer appeared at court by video link from Musgrave custody suite where DS Boyce outlined how officers had already obtained some preliminary forensic findings and the post-mortem examination is ongoing.
She said CCTV had also been seized as part of the investigation and as the alleged killer had not given police the passcode for his phone, “we are having to consider more intrusive ways of getting access to his phone.”
Granting the 36-hour extension, District Judge Rosie Watters said given the fact it’s a murder investigation “there are always extensions of time because the investigation has to be so thorough.”
