A park in Scarborough has been renamed in honour of Coun. Cynthia Lai, who passed away in 2022.
The city announced on Saturday the renaming of Rosebank Park at 1051 Progress Ave. to Cynthia Lai Park.
According to the city, the park, which was chosen with the support of Lai’s family, commemorates the late councillor’s contributions to the city.
During her time in the office, Lai supported cleanup and maintenance efforts at local parks, including Rosebank Park, making it a fitting location to remember the late councillor, the city said.
“Cynthia Lai was a passionate champion for families and communities in Scarborough. Naming Cynthia Lai Park after her is a fitting tribute, as it will forever stand as a place where her mission of creating a better Scarborough and Toronto can be enjoyed by all,” Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said in a statement.
The city said the 4.3-hectare park features an open green space, horticultural displays and basketball courts.
Lai, who represented Ward 23 Scarborough North, died in the hospital at the age of 68 on Oct. 21, 2022, following a year-long battle with an illness.
