Give him this, the man is box office. At 5.13 pm today, Rory McIlroy stood over a putt 27 feet 10 inches in length on The K Club’s 18th green, needing eagle to force a play-off to win his second Irish Open and spare us another in the curious line of unheralded Swedish winners.

Approximately eight seconds later, the entire place went balubas. Apoplectic.
