LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Several people were detained outside the federal courthouse in Louisville Monday ahead of Brett Hankison’s sentencing hearing.

WHAS11 News crews outside of the courthouse witnessed Louisville Metro Police detain at least four people. They saw several people blocking traffic prior to LMPD showing up.

One of the people detained was Breonna Taylor’s aunt, Bianca Austin.

At least one person was seen on the street blocking a Louisville Water truck and jumping on the hood.

“This afternoon, as a crowd gathered near 6th and Broadway, a Louisville Water employee in their company vehicle was driving through [the] area,” Louisville Water told WHAS11 News in a statement. “As the employee encountered the situation, they did their best to safely leave the area.”

LMPD blocked 6th Street to Chestnut Street near the courthouse in downtown Louisville, and there is a large police presence in the area.

WHAS11 News has reached out to LMPD for more information.

Last November, a federal jury found Hankison guilty of using excessive force with the intent to kill when he fired 10 shots into the side of her apartment during the night of the deadly 2020 police raid. None of Hankison’s bullets hit Taylor.

The DOJ recommended no jail time for Hankison, instead saying he should be sentenced to three years of supervised probation. The DOJ said it based its recommendation on his lack of criminal record, emotional distress and PTSD from the media coverage of his trial.

The recommended sentence was met with public outcry with community members saying the recommendation is a “slap in the face.”
