The Toronto Blue Jays are going to be without shortstop Bo Bichette for a crucial portion of the 2025 season.
The Blue Jays announced on Tuesday morning that Bichette has been placed on the 10-day IL (retroactive to Sept. 7) with a left knee sprain. In a corresponding move, they have recalled outfielder Joey Loperfido from Triple-A Buffalo. The 26-year-old will be active for tonight’s game versus the Houston Astros.
This is a tough blow for the Blue Jays, who hold the top spot in the AL East Division by just two games as the New York Yankees remain hot on their tail. The Jays currently sit at 82-61 with just 19 games remaining on their schedule.
Though his defensive play causes headaches for Jays fans from time to time, Bichette has delivered at the plate after what was a disappointing and injury-riddled 2024 season. The 27-year-old is hitting .311 with 18 home runs and 94 RBI through 139 games. He’s just 10 hits shy of his career-high 191 set back in 2021, and has the highest batting average of his career since appearing in 46 games as a rookie in 2019.
Bichette’s injury seemingly came on Saturday versus the Yankees, as he appeared to be in discomfort after his leg slid into catcher Tyler Wells. He was able to finish the game, but was held out of the series finale on Sunday.

As for Loperfido, this will be his first time back up with the big club since mid-August. Despite an underwhelming .743 OPS in Triple A, he’s been excellent in limited action with the Jays, hitting a blistering .358 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in just 89 plate appearances.
Bichette will first be eligible to return on Sept. 17 versus the Tampa Bay Rays, meaning at the very least he will miss both a three-game series against the Astros and the Baltimore Orioles.
