The Toronto Argonauts will start Nick Arbuckle at quarterback against the Edmonton Elks in Week 15, according to head coach Ryan Dinwiddie.

“Nick’s gonna be getting the start,” Dinwiddie said after practice on Tuesday. “Chad got out there today, got some good practice reps. The ball was live coming off of his hands. I want to see him move a little more cleaner.”

Last week, Kelly posted a video to his Instagram account featuring clips of him in an Argonauts uniform at BMO Field. The words “the comeback” were written across the screen near the end of the video along with the date for Toronto’s upcoming home game.

Though the post drew speculation Kelly could return to the starting lineup, it remains unclear when exactly he will get under centre. Dinwiddie wouldn’t even commit to dressing Kelly this week depending on how he’s feeling closer to the game.

“I think it’s gonna be a week-to-week deal. Chad’s our franchise quarterback, let’s not lose sight of that but Nick’s playing good football and offensively, we’re rolling pretty good. I think if we do put Chad out there, I anticipate having the same success on offence. We’ll have to make the best decision for the football club,” Dinwiddie said.

“We’re not going to put him out there if he can’t protect himself and put him in harm’s way. We don’t want to make a knee jerk decision when it comes to that.”

Kelly has yet to dress for the Argonauts since the East Final last year when he suffered a fractured right tibia and fibula. Over 45 regular-season CFL games, the Buffalo, N.Y. native has completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 6,871 yards, 35 touchdowns against 23 interceptions and rushed 113 times for 599 yards with 19 scores. He won a Grey Cup with Toronto as a rookie in 2022 and was named the league’s Most Outstanding Player in 2023.

Arbuckle has started all 12 Toronto games so far this season, completing 72.8 percent of his passes for a CFL-leading 3,828 yards, 23 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He has also rushed 38 times for 150 yards and two scores.

The Argos (4-8) host Edmonton (5-7) on Saturday, September 13 with kickoff slated for 3:00 p.m. ET. The Elks earned a 31-19 upset win over Calgary last week, while Toronto was on a bye.

The weather forecast in Toronto calls for a high of 24 degrees with a mix of sun and cloud. The game will be broadcast on TSN and CTV in Canada and CFL+ internationally. Radio listeners can tune-in on 880 CHED in Edmonton and TSN 1050 in Toronto.
