An officer and one other individual were injured in the shooting early Wednesday morning, according to Austin police.
AUSTIN, Texas — An Austin police officer was reportedly shot and injured early Wednesday morning near Zilker Park in South Austin.Â
According to the Austin Police Department (APD), the officer was shot at around 4 a.m. along the 700 block of Azie Morton Road. An additional person was also injured, according to law enforcement.Â
As of 8:35 a.m. Wednesday, Austin police said one person is in custody. Authorities said the alleged suspect is heading to the hospital and was not shot by law enforcement.Â
Ahead of the shooting, officers were reportedly in the area when they noticed a vehicle that was potentially stolen. Law enforcement allegedly approached the scene, when the suspect fired a weapon. Â
Austin Police Association president Michael Bullock said the injured officer is expected to survive, and they are reportedly in a hospital as of 6:15 a.m. Wednesday. It’s uncertain how the other injured individual is related to the shooting.Â
APD units are searching for a suspect, and people in the area are asked to be on the lookout for a white man wearing a green shirt with tan pants.Â
At roughly 8:20 a.m., Austin police confirmed a second shooting near the initial incident. The exact location is currently unknown, and no additional injuries have been reported at this time. Authorities believe there could be a connection between the first and second shooting.Â
A shelter in place is currently active for residents in the area. Police are asking drivers to avoid the area until further notice, and patrol officers from other parts of Austin have been called to help find the shooter.Â
Austin ISD told families that those who have not yet sent their children to schools in the area are encouraged to make the best decisions for their families. Entry and exit is prohibited at the schools during this time, and any children entering late will be escorted into the buildings.Â
Austin police were set to hold a media briefing at 8 a.m. Wednesday, but this has since been delayed. The briefing is set to be held at the department’s headquarters.Â
