Popular American right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk has been shot while speaking on a university campus in Utah.

Video circulating on social media shows Mr Kirk, 31, seated under a white tent and speaking into a microphone when he appears to be shot in the upper body.

A spokesperson for Mr Kirk told Fox News: “Charlie Kirk has been shot at Utah Valley University. Condition unknown.”

The university said a suspect was in custody.

“Today at about 12:10 a shot was fired at the visiting speaker, Charlie Kirk,” the university said in an X post.

“He was hit and taken from the location by his security. Campus police is investigating.”

US President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: “We must all pray for Charlie Kirk, who has been shot. A great guy from top to bottom. GOD BLESS HIM!”

FBI director Kash Patel said agents were heading to the scene.

“We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University,” he said on X.

“Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected.

“Agents will be on the scene quickly and the FBI stands in full support of the ongoing response and investigation.”

Mr Kirk is the founder of conservative youth organisation Turning Point USA.

With millions of followers online, he is credited with mobilising the youth vote for Mr Trump at last year’s election.

His online content, including clips from his well-known “Prove Me Wrong” debates with progressive students on university campuses, frequently goes viral.
