The death has been announced of Victor Fisher, a former town councillor and pillar of the community of Letterkenny.
Mr Fisher passed away today at his home, Anfield Grove, Kiltoy, aged 85.
He is mourned by his wife Helen, daughter Mairead, (Jonny), sons David (Justine), Kevin (Clara) and Barry, grandchildren and great-grandson Leo, sister Eileen (Hull), in laws, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Born in Ramelton in 1940 to George Fisher and Frances Donnelly, Victor moved to Letterkenny with his family at the age of six.
Always a proud ‘Letterkenny man’, he made an indelible mark on the town through his business and political endeavours, as well as his extensive involvement with sports clubs.
One of his greatest honours was wearing the Mayoral chain of the Cathedral Town in three different spells. Coming from a Fine Gael family, Victor was recruited by Senator Bernard McGlinchey to join Fianna Fáil in 1969. He was elected to Letterkenny Urban District Council seven consecutive times, retiring ‘undefeated’.

Away from his political and business life, Victor had a passion for football and was a devoted fan of Liverpool FC. He named his family home in Kiltoy ‘Anfield’ in tribute to the club.
His involvement in local football was extensive, including a 30-year period with Finn Harps.
A stalwart of Letterkenny Rovers, he was elected Honorary President of the club in 2023.

Through his businesses and role as Commissioner of Oaths and Peace Commissioner, he formed great connections with people and had the opportunity to take their concerns onward to the council chamber.
After working for approximately 30 years at Harris’ Shop on the Main Street, he opened his own business, Victor’s Gift Shop, beside the Post Office. Other locals and visitors would have encountered Victor on paybox duty at the door of the Golden Grill.
Even after the Town Council was disbanded, Victor was a familiar face on Upper Main Street selling lotto tickets and he never missed an opportunity to chat with people.
