A man who killed his own mother in her Birmingham home has been jailed for life.

Surjit Singh rang a relative and told her that he’d attacked Mohinder Kaur, aged 76, in the family house on Clarence Road, Handsworth.

The shocked relative then rang 999 after speaking to Singh, at around 1pm on 29 September last year.

Minutes later, West Midlands Police forced their way into the terraced property and found her lying fatally wounded on the living room floor.

Mohinder was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital but was sadly pronounced dead just before 11.30pm.

Singh returned to the scene of the attack at around 3pm and was arrested by officers.

While in custody, he said: “I didn’t mean to do it. I just lost my head.”

Mohinder died as a result of injuries consistent with a number of blows but it was not clear if a weapon was used or what the motive was.

Singh went on to plead guilty to murder and was today (12 September) jailed at Birmingham Crown Court.

Det Insp Nick Barnes said: “This senseless killing has torn apart a family, and our thoughts remain with everyone affected.”
