Pat McAfee opened ESPN’s “College GameDay” on Saturday with a passionate plea for college football, a sports, he said, puts political differences aside.
The Charles Kirk assassination has held the country’s attention all week, and the college football analyst pointed that out.
“To get the chance to be around the beautiful town for the last 24 hours has made me realize that it’s great to be a Tennessee Volunteer,” as the crowd joined in the chant.
“It’s not just a great day to be a Tennessee Volunteer, it’s also a great day to live in the greatest country on Earth: The United States of America.
“All week, we’ve seen and heard – maybe a lot more than we ever should – about what separates us and makes us different and our differing opinions, but on this beautiful campus on this glorious Saturday, you’ll see 102,000-plus in the eighth-largest stadium in the world from different economic backgrounds, from different political backgrounds, religious backgrounds, you name it, all coming together one thing: And that’s to kick Georgia’s ass.”
While the crowd reacted in Knoxville as you might imagine, McAfee pushed his point home.
“A football lockerroom is the greatest place on Earth,” he said. “It’s stadium is as well. Today, we celebrate what makes this country great. Today, we celebrate the greatest sport on Earth: Football.”
McAfee said football bring people together.
“It tries to (bring everybody together), and we need to remember, especially on week’s like this, it’s great to be alive. It’s great to be a football fan,” he said. “Saturday always deliver.”
