A fire extensively damaged a derelict building  in Ballina yesterday evening.

The incident occurred on Kevin St in the town and the street remains closed off to traffic this morning and diversions are in place.

Gardai say they are awaiting a report from  an engineer this morning to ensure that the structure is stable and of no danger to passersby.

The premises  had been earmarked by Mayo County Council  for a major social housing development .

The fire broke out shortly after 9 pm, across from the bus station.

Emergency services were quickly on the scene  after passersby noticed smoke and raised the alarm.

The blaze was brought under control.

The building is located on a site where the local authority had lodged plans last year to construct 31 apartments.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
