Latvia, Riga – Dennis Schroder and Germany are on top of the world, having also won the EuroBasket, proving that they are the team to beat in FIBA Basketball.
And they did it by winning both the World Cup and the Eurobasket with a perfect 18-0 record.
As Schroder said, explaining the success of the team: “Unbelievable! The strech we had, 9-0. We also had that two years ago in the World Cup. To go 9-0 this summer and in this game. First off, sorry, Turkey played one hell of a game, Sengun, Larkin, all those guys, Sipahi hit a bit three, but as the coach said, we never shy away from big moments. It’s not just Franz, not just me, it’s all our team. Bonga, Andy Obst, it was a big effort by everyone. Big-time plays by big-time characters. I am so proud of these guys because we stayed together as a team. It’s big time being World Cup Champions and Eurobasket winners”.
Can this momentum, not only from Germany but also from the Eurobasket, translate to the NBA with the new All-Star format that the league is expected to use and have a “World Team”?
The answer for the German point guard is clear: “Ι never been an All-Star, but we have four or five people who are the best in the world, and they represent Europe. We have Doncic, we have Jokic, Franz Wagner is up there, we have so many European guys who are putting on a show in the NBA. And that comes with these tournaments as well. Big time tournaments, big time players, and we are going to keep pushing for Europe”.
Dennis Schroder also talked about the moment he shared with Giannis Antetokounmpo after the end of the final: “Giannis made a good gesture, he came to me, and said that we are representing our countries, Germany and Greece, he got his first medal with Greece. Nothing but respect for him, he has four beautiful children, his wife, his brothers who are always with him doing the same thing, but what he does in the NBA is on a different level. He is among the best players in the world. It was great that he came up to me, a sign of great sportsmanship. He told me he was watching our YouTube videos, and I think it’s great for Greece and Germany”.
