A yellow weather warning will be in place across Merseyside with strong winds expected to batter much of the UK. The Met Office has confirmed that strong and gusty winds are likely to cause some disruption to travel and interruptions to power across large parts of the country.
The yellow weather warning starts from 8pm today, Sunday, and will continue to be in place until 6pm tomorrow, Monday. It’s been a wet and windy Sunday on Merseyside so far with the gusts expected to steadily increase throughout the evening and overnight as the yellow warning takes effect.
The Met Office said: “Strong west or south-westerly winds will arrive across coastal areas of southwest England and Wales during Sunday evening, then develop more widely inland during Monday morning.
“Gusts of 45-55mph are expected widely inland, with gusts of 60-70mph possible at times along exposed coasts and hills. Winds will only slowly ease from the west later in the afternoon and into Monday evening.”
Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said: “The strongest winds are expected to be for west Wales and North West England on Monday morning, where we could see gusts of up to 65 miles per hour.”
He added that Monday will be “a windy and pretty unsettled start to the week with a mixture of sunny spells and heavy blustery showers”, mainly in England and Wales, but there will be “some fairly brisk winds at times further north as well”.
It comes ahead of “changeable” conditions with periods of wind and rain through the coming week.
Mr Morgan said: “The ground has started to become fairly wet over recent weeks and it will not take a huge amount more for there to be some surface water, potentially some flooding issues as we go towards the middle part of the week.”
According to the Met Office, the strongest winds on Monday will hit Merseyside from around 11am. Merseyside is also expected to face a period of rain throughout Sunday night and into Monday.
The rain is most likely to hit Merseyside in the middle of Monday afternoon, with the chance of precipitation currently listed at 90% between 3pm and 7pm.
The Met Office has issued advice to anyone in an area affected by the yellow weather warning. The Met Office said: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables and amending your travel plans if necessary.
“People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance. It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items.
“If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea.
“Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.”
