Two people are dead after they were hit by a pickup truck, Winnipeg police say, and a man is charged with impaired driving causing death.

The truck driving at high speed southbound on Kenaston Boulevard drove onto a shoulder and hit two people near Enterprise Drive on Saturday, police said at a news conference Monday.

They said a 31-year-old man was found dead at the crash scene, a block south of Ikea.

A 25-year-old woman was found critically injured. She was taken to hospital, where she died.

The two were together on the shoulder of the road, not in a vehicle, police said.

A bicycle was found nearby.

The driver didn’t stay at the scene, police said. Police arrested a man nearby a short time later.

Kuldeep Singh Gill, 46, faces two charges each of dangerous operation of a conveyance causing death, operation of a conveyance causing death while impaired and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.

Gill previously pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle while impaired in 2016.

Police said they’re still investigating to determine what happened before the crash.
