Andrew Coscoran produced a mammoth performance in Tokyo this afternoon, booking his place in the 1500m final at the World Championships after a stunning performance.
The Dubliner came into today’s semi-final knowing that he would probably need to produce one of his greatest ever runs in order to make the final, a benchmark he certainly hit.
Facing a field that included three former world champions, the Irishman looked to still have plenty in the tank as he cruised to a fifth-placed finish.

Heffernan Had Warning For Ireland’s Andrew Coscoran After Making World Final
Andrew Coscoran has long been one the most talented athletes in this country, although the 29-year old has had to bide his time before performing to his best on a global level.
He will now have a massive opportunity on Wednesday in a world final.
Speaking on RTÉ, Rob Heffernan had a warning for Coscoran ahead of that race, saying it was an opportunity that he could not let pass.
He’s not done yet, I think it’s really important where he goes now after this. He’s into the final.
You think of the tradition, we’ve had Marcus O’Sullivan, Frank O’Meara, Eamon Coughlan, all the greats over 1500, [Coscoran] is our record holder.
He was so composed in the race from the get go, his positioning was good, he looked very composed. He has all of the markers coming into the world semi-final that he had the belief that he is good enough to be in a world final…
It’s really, really exciting. We had three former world champions here, Niels Laros is arguably the best in the world at the moment, and Andrew looked as good if not better than all of them.
I think he needs to stay calm now, have the right people around him. He’s after ticking a lot of boxes now for even the federation.
He’s in a world final and this could be the biggest moment of his life. There is no guarantee that he will ever be back there again, so he needs to go in firing like this.
The whole country is behind him.
Andrew Coscoran will still be a big underdog heading into that 1500m final, but his performance today showed that he can compete with anybody when he performs at his best.
The race will take place on Wednesday at 2:25pm Irish time. As Rob Heffernan said, the whole country will be behind him.
