It had been a long day, and it felt like spirits had begun to flag in Roscommon council chamber as councillors heard from a myriad of presidential hopefuls.

There was a mathematician, two solicitors, an animal rights activist, a peace activist, an artist, an engineer, an entrepreneur, a bus driver, an anti-abortionist and an angry man in a dark room on his laptop.
