A 17-year-old girl is in a trauma centre with life-threatening injuries after the vehicle she was driving plunged into water in Georgina, Ont., over the weekend.

Investigators with York Regional Police say officers were called to the area of Metro Road and Lagoon Drive around 2:40 a.m. Saturday for a single-vehicle crash.

When officers arrived, only the rear tires of the vehicle were visible, with the rest of the vehicle submerged beneath the water.

Police say a passenger managed to escape with minor injuries, but emergency crews had to free the trapped driver.

Detectives are appealing to witnesses and anyone with dash camera footage of the incident to come forward.

They urge anyone with information to contact the authorities or upload video via this link.
