Hamilton police are investigating after a 16-year-old suffering critical injuries was dumped from an SUV following a collision on the weekend.
Police said a call came in at around 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 13 for a collision in the area of Mohawk Road West and Ashton Road.
A 15-year-old girl was driving a stolen Volkswagen SUV with two passengers, a 16-year-old girl and another 15-year-old girl, when she struck a light pole, police said.
The 16-year-old sustained critical injuries, police said, as she, for unknown reasons, was leaning outside the passenger side of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
“The SUV then turned southbound on Ashton Road, where the injured youth was removed from the vehicle,” police said.
As the two other girls were driving away to flee, officials say they struck a witness vehicle that had stopped to help the 16-year-old.
Police said the SUV was later found abandoned a short distance away on Darlington Street.
Officers located one of the girls later that evening with the help of the witness, police said.
“The remaining occupant has since identified themselves to police and has been interviewed. Charges are expected; however, the investigation remains ongoing,” police said, noting that the girls will not be identified as they are under 18.
Meanwhile, police said the 16-year-old remains in the hospital in serious condition.
