Donegal Gardaí have dubbed a west Donegal driver with a bald tyre as the new “Scary from Dungloe”.
Gardaí from the Milford Roads Policing Unit say they stopped a car on Dungloe’s Main Street yesterday, which they found had a tyre with insufficient tread.
“‘Scary from Dungloe!’ Milford Roads Policing Unit stopped a car at Main Street, Dungloe yesterday only to discover that one of the tyres was in quite a scary state,” An Garda Síochána Donegal posted on social media.
“There was no ceremony and no speeches… just a fixed charge penalty notice that will now be issued. This means that the driver will have to pay a fine of €80 and they will also receive 2 penalty points.”
With more inclement weather on the way for the next few months, Gardaí are reminding the public that having sufficient tread on your tyres to deal with wet road conditions becomes all the more important.
“Please check your tyres regularly and even more regularly when the tread depth reaches 3mm. Ensure that your tyres have plenty of tread and are above the legal limit of 1.6mm (1mm for motorcycles).”
“The more worn that your tyres become, the less grip they will have on the road surface. It therefore takes longer to stop a vehicle when the road surface is wet.”
“We ask everyone to conduct all necessary safety checks before undertaking each journey. Never take to the roads if your vehicle is not in a roadworthy condition.”
