There is no tsunami threat to B.C. following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake rumbled 255 miles (410 kilometres) southwest of Bering Island, Russia on Thursday.
The province’s coast was previously being assessed for a risk, then just before 1:15 p.m. Emergency Info BC updated that there was no threat to B.C.
According to the North West Tsunami Centre, the magnitude 7.8 earthquake occurred 90 miles east of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, at 11:58 p.m. PDT Thursday.
Large weekend earthquake
Last week, Emergency Info B.C. was also monitoring tsunami risks to B.C. following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on the east coast of Russia that hit Friday night.
After monitoring and assessing the potential threat, just after 8 p.m. Friday, Emergency Info BC followed up stating “An M7.5 earthquake has occurred 75 miles (120 km) East of Petropavlovsk, Kamchatka, Russia. There is NO tsunami threat to #BC. More info: tsunami.gov.”
