York Regional Police Const. James Dickson say a woman was the victim of a targeted shooting outside her home in Markham, which was captured on video.
Two people have been charged with attempted murder after a woman was shot in Markham in January.
The shooting happened on Jan. 21, at around 5:30 p.m., in the area of Lee Avenue and Noble Street, by Highway 407 and Kennedy Road.
York Regional Police had released footage of the shooting in January where a suspect sporting a neon safety vest and construction helmet can be seen approaching a woman from behind and firing what appears to be a gun at her.
The gun appears to malfunction, giving the woman a chance to get away from him. After struggling to fix the gun, the man is seen firing two more shots towards the home before scampering to a parked vehicle and driving away.
Officers say they found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound when they arrived at the scene, adding she was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators executed a search warrant at a residence in Markham on Aug. 7, prompting the arrest of one suspect. A Canada-wide warrant was also issued for a second suspect.
Over a month later, on Sept. 16, police say they tookthe second suspect into custody.
Chao Chen, 35, and Zhou Ye, 42, are facing charges for attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
It is unclear if the suspects and the victim knew each other. Police previously said they believe the shooting was targeted and the woman was the intended victim.
“At the time of their arrests, Ye was on a judicial release order and Chen was wanted by York Regional Police for unrelated matters,” officials said in a news release.
The charges have not been tested in court.
