Police are investigating the attack at the Renton Transit Center as a potential hate crime.

RENTON, Wash — Two additional suspects in an attack on a transgender woman at the Renton Transit Center earlier this week are now in police custody.

Officers said a group of people beat up the 39-year-old woman on Monday night, and the attack is being investigated as a potential hate crime. Two teen suspects were arrested the night of the attack, a third was booked by police on Thursday afternoon and a 25-year-old man turned himself in late Thursday after a family member recognized the suspect’s photo when it was released by police.

Nikki Armstrong told KING 5 earlier this week that she intervened Monday night when a group of teens harassed a transit security guard. Hours later, about 8:20 p.m., she said the same group chased her until she fell.

“They were on top of me, and it was all fists and feet,” Armstrong said. “They held me by my neck and choked me while they were stomping on me and taking turns punching me in the face. When the kid took me down and put an arm around my neck I was 100 percent certain they were going to kill me.”

Armstrong said the teens also used homophobic slurs during the attack. She suffered facial fractures, including a broken nose and eye socket.

Renton police arrested two suspects, ages 15 and 17, who they say are brothers and football players at Renton High School. A King County judge found probable cause for assault, and both were released on electronic home detention.

“That means they go home,” said Meeghan Black, spokesperson for Renton police. “And they’re able, from my understanding, to play football. They’re just not allowed to contact the victim or be at the Renton Transit Center.”

Armstrong expressed mixed feelings about the decision.

“I don’t think they should be locked up. I agree with the house arrests. I don’t necessarily agree with them playing football and being rewarded essentially,” she said.

Investigators say the case will be referred to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and the teens are due back in court Friday.

KING 5 has reached out to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office (KCPAO) for updates on court appearances for the 16-year-old third suspect and the man who turned himself in late Thursday night.
