Wayward shooting cost the Breakers dearly in their NBL season-opening 104-95 loss to the Brisbane Bullets in Auckland.
The misfiring home side trailed throughout most of the contest, having been unable to shut down key Brisbane offensive pair Casey Prather and Tyrell Harrison.
New Zealand centre Harrison was among the best players on court, scoring 24 points and pulling down 15 rebounds.
The Breakers landed just five of their 29 three-point attempts, while their offence stuttered in other areas, including 16 turnovers.
Guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright was the best Breaker on the stats sheet, scoring 16 points while producing 12 assists and six rebounds.
Fellow American Izaiah Brockington scored 16 points and Sam Mennenga 14, but the home side gradually lost touch in the second half after trailing just 46-44 at the main break.
Breakers coach Petteri Koponen said his team will need to quickly lift their standards ahead of another home game on Sunday, against Melbourne United.
