Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount have been named on Manchester United’s bench against Chelsea because Ruben Amorim did not want to risk starting the pair after their recent injuries.
Amorim has overseen United’s worst start to a Premier League season for 33 years. Sources have insisted Amorim retains the board’s full backing, but that hasn’t stopped speculation about his future.
United need to secure a positive result against Chelsea. Amorim has picked seven defensive players to face the London club, making two changes from the Manchester derby defeat last weekend.
Casemiro and Harry Maguire have come into the team for Manuel Ugarte and Leny Yoro.
Mount and Cunha have returned from injury, but they have both been named on the bench. Speaking to Sky Sports about that pair, Amorim explained: “We cannot risk players and then you have other players. You see our focus, the way we play in both boxes is the thing we need to change.
“It’s also to show the players it’s not about changing the players all the time, it’s to believe what we are doing and we are capable of doing that with all the players in the squad.
“When you return from injury, you have to be careful. We cannot lose Matheus or Mason for many games.”
Juan Mata was responsible for Chelsea’s last victory at Old Trafford in May 2013. The former United midfielder scored in the 87th minute to wrap up a late win for Chelsea when Rafael Benitez was in charge.
Chelsea drew 1-1 with United when they last visited Old Trafford in November.
