A pedestrian in his 40s has died after he was struck by a car in Mitchelstown, Co Cork last night.

The incident happened at around 9.15pm between Junction 11 and Junction 12 northbound on the M8.

His body has been taken to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.

Its understood he was originally from eastern Europe and had been living in Mitchelstown recently.

The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was uninjured.

The stretch of motorway remains closed for forensic examination with local diversions in place.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

They particularly want to speak to any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were traveling in the area at the time of the collision.
