It’s a youthful roster this afternoon for Toronto’s first preseason game as the official roster reveal from the team shows a heavy emphasis on youth and development.
But as for who is playing in the game, we now know who made the trip and it’s certainly a young group of talent.
Who Made the Cut for Today’s Preseason Roster
The official Maple Leafs PR account released the lineup where you can see only Nick Robertson, David Kampf, and Calle Jarnkrok; the latter two who may not be in the team’s plans much longer as the only NHL players.
Here is the full list of players (forwards, defense, goalies):
The rest are a mixture of depth players, fringe candidates and prospects with Easton Cowan expected to have a big game as no doubt he’ll get a ton of looks as one of the main offensive weapons for Craig Berube.
One key to note here is that while a majority of the players are Marlies players, names like Vinni Lettieri, Philippe Myers, Travis Boyd, and Michael Pezzetta are all NHL-calber players with lots of experience so it’s not like Toronto can’t call upon these guys in case of emergency.
What This Roster Tells Us About Early Camp Battles
While it’s unlikely that a lot of these players make the roster, one of, if not the biggest focus is going to be how Easton Cowan can handle things.
Of all the players going to Ottawa he certainly has the most offensive flair and with him fighting so hard for a spot, there’s no telling what he could do in order to impress.
But it’s also really interesting to see Robertson, Kampf, and Jarnkrok because it almost feels like this is their litmus test. If they are unable to outperform the Marlies players or find themselves struggling to keep up; that could be their downfall.
The other group which is the NHL squad is going to be keeping an eye out on things no doubt as the competition is going to pick up even more once these players practice again; if confidence is high that means the intensity is too.
