A man in his 40s has died after being struck by a car on the M8 motorway in Co Cork last night.

The fatal collision took place on the northbound stretch of the motorway at Carrigane, Mitchelstown, at around 9.15pm between junction 11 and junction 12.

The body of the man, whom gardaí described as a pedestrian, was taken to the mortuary in Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place.

The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, was not injured.

Gardaí have closed off the section of the road where the collision occurred as the Garda Forensic Collision Investigators conduct a technical examination of the scene.

A statement from Gardaí read: “Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward. Gardaí are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area at the time of the collision to make this footage available to Gardaí.

Separately, a motorcyclist in his 70s died in Tipperary this morning after being involved in a collision with a van on the N24 at Cahir.

The accident occurred at around 11:05am, and the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road remains closed as Garda forensic investigators examine the scene.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to the incident to come forward,

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 10.45am and 11.15am this morning, are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí,” a spokesperson for the force said in a statement:

Gardaí attended the scene of another vehicle collision last night in which four people were seriously injured after a car left the road in Co Kilkenny.

The incident happened on the M9 Motorway southbound, at Stonecarty, Knocktopher, at around 7pm on Saturday.

Gardaí said the vehicle was travelling southbound on the motorway, left the road and came to a stop in a field.

“The male driver, aged in his 30s and his three passengers, aged in their 30s and 40s, were removed from the scene to Waterford University Hospital collision where they remain in a serious condition,” they said.

“Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Gardaí are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, who were travelling in the area at the time of the collision to make this footage available to Gardaí.”
