The Vancouver Whitecaps are having a season to remember.

After defeating Sporting Kansas City 2-0 on Saturday night, the Whitecaps improved to 16-6-7 on the season, moving their point total to a franchise-best 55 points with five regular-season matches left.

That point total eclipsed Vancouver’s previous best of 53 points set during the 2015 MLS season. The Whitecaps have also tied their franchise record for wins in a season at 16, also set in 2015.

Head coach Jesper Sørensen spoke to the media after the match and talked about the new franchise mark.

“What we’ve seen for a while now is that we have been looking strong,” Sørensen said. “The entire squad has been ready for the games, and we’re performing at a good level.

“I think our standard right now is pretty good. I’m just positive that we look good.”

The arrival of German superstar Thomas Müller has helped propel the Whitecaps into the class of the MLS, but he wasn’t on the field against Kansas due to an injury. He joined a list of high-profile injuries that also includes Brian White, Ryan Gauld, Sam Adekugbe, and Tristan Blackmon.

Canadian defender Ali Ahmed commented on the team finding a way through injuries.

“Next man up has been a big theme for our group this year,” Ahmed said. “I think a lot of guys, a lot of quality, long-time experienced guys going down [and] some inexperienced guys coming in and looking like they’ve been here before.

“Another big away win with guys going down is not easy to win in this league, but we did a great job of it today.”

The Whitecaps sit alone in second place in the MLS Western Conference, just two points behind the leading San Diego FC. Overall, Vancouver is fourth in the entire league behind Philadelphia, San Diego, and Cincinnati.

It’s a great accomplishment for the Whitecaps, but the job is far from over. The club is looking to parlay this record-setting regular season into playoff success. The furthest that Vancouver has gone in the MLS Cup playoffs is a couple of trips to the Conference Semi-Finals in 2015 and 2017.
