Takeaways

Believed to be the first of its kind, the ecosystem forecasting system from Carey and her colleagues is collecting data from 15 lakes and reservoirs spanning three continents and providing each with a daily, 30-day forecast.

From the diversity of lakes, researchers are learning their ability to accurately forecast can change based on lake conditions, specifically depth and water clarity.

The Center for Ecosystem Research’s work extends beyond bodies of water and includes forecasts for land and insect populations.

About Carey

Carey is the Patricia Caldwell Faculty Fellow, a professor of biological sciences, and a founding director of Virginia Tech’s Center for Ecosystem Forecasting. Her research integrates freshwater ecosystem ecology and data science to examine how humans are affecting freshwater systems and in turn how changing water quality is altering human decision-making.

About the podcast

“Curious Conversations” is a series of free-flowing conversations with Virginia Tech researchers that take place at the intersection of world-class research and everyday life. Produced and hosted by Travis Williams, assistant director of marketing and communications for the Office of Research and Innovation, university researchers share their expertise and motivations as well as the practical applications of their work in a format that more closely resembles chats at a cookout than classroom lectures. New episodes are shared each Tuesday.
