After scoring plenty of nominations following their film Don’t Look Up, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are set to reunite on-screen once again, this time in much darker roles.
The major movie stars are set to appear in Martin Scorsese’s ghost story adaptation, What Happens at Night, per Deadline.
The outlet reports that Apple Original Films is in negotiating talks with Studiocanal, which has “developed the script.”
The novel, written by Peter Cameron, follows an American couple’s journey to a European town to adopt a baby. After they check into a “fading” hotel, where they encounter an “enigmatic cast of characters,” and “nothing is quite as it seems,” they worry the orphanage won’t release their child, as his wife is struggling with cancer.
“As they struggle to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about themselves and the life they’ve built together,” the synopsis notes.
While the unsettling plot seems perfect for spooky season, it definitely won’t be on your “must watch this Halloween” list this season, as the outlet reports the cast and crew are “eyeing a January start” on production.
The reported film, however, brings DiCaprio and Scorsese back to the thriller genre, as many may remember their 2010 psychological mystery hit Shutter Island. While the Titanic actor has held disturbing and dark roles, he hasn’t traditionally starred in many pure horror films, so this would mark his first true supernatural horror.
Lawrence, on the other hand, has some experience with horror-adjacent themes, including the 2017 psychological horror mother!
While the film seems promising, and we have full faith in Scorcese, DiCaprio and Lawrence, it did receive a 3.52 rating on GoodReads.
DiCaprio and Lawrence previously co-starred in the Netflix 2021 dark comedy, which provided a satirical commentary on climate change and society’s response to global crises, with the duo starring as astronomers who attempt to warn humanity after discovering a comet is heading straight towards Earth.
