Alexander Isak reflected on the ‘amazing’ feeling of scoring his first Liverpool goal.
The striker opened his account for the club in Tuesday night’s 2-1 Carabao Cup victory over Southampton at Anfield.
Isak started the scoring towards the end of the first half of the third-round tie, with Hugo Ekitike proving to be the match-winner with his late finish not long after Shea Charles’ equaliser.
Speaking to ITV Sport post-match, the No.9 said: “Amazing. It was good to get back out there and score my first goal here, at Anfield. The win as well. So, it’s a good night.
“I should have scored that one [the chance early on] as well, but that’s a part of being a striker – you miss some and then you score some.
“I think the most important [thing] is to shake it off and to be ready for the next one.
“I just try to play my game and not think too much. I feel confidence in myself that things will work out and that when I get my chances I’ll put them away – that’s my mindset. I’m happy that I put one away today.”
Isak was handed his second start for the Reds in the clash against the Saints, playing 45 minutes before being withdrawn at the interval.
With three appearances in the past week, the 26-year-old is benefiting from every outing when it comes to his sharpness.
He said: “I feel good, I feel good. I think with every game I play it’s very helpful and gets me in better shape. I’m just getting more and more ready.”
Asked how close he is to being 100 per cent fit, Isak replied: “It’s difficult to say. I think it’s a mixture of fitness-wise and also football-wise. I feel good, I feel like I’m in a shape to at least make a difference.”
