Cardiff City produced one of their best performances of the season as they stunned Premier League Burnley with a 2-1 victory to book their place in the Carabao Cup fourth round.
First-half goals from Joel Colwill and Callum Robinson gave Brian Barry-Murphy’s side a commanding lead, before a resolute defensive display – and some brilliant saves from Nathan Trott after an earlier error – saw the Bluebirds over the line.
Burnley hit back through Zian Flemming in the second half and piled on the pressure late, but Cardiff showed grit and game management to hold firm and seal a memorable cup upset at Turf Moor. Here’s how the players rated…
Nathan Trott 7
Made two fantastic saves in the first half – and both with his legs. First a one-on-one with Armando Broja and then a reaction stop from Zian Flemming. Terrible pass out then allowed Flemming to score, but then made another top save to deny Mike Tresor.
Perry Ng 8
Looked far more confident linking up with Davies ahead of him and aided Cardiff’s attack with his advancing positions. Back to his old self.
Will Fish 8
Really solid display from the centre-back. Threw his body about and was composed in possession. Dovetailed really nicely with Chambers next to him.
Calum Chambers 9
Arguably his best outing of the season. Was excellent at the back and won the duel to set up Joel Colwill for the first. Made a crucial block to deny a golden chance for Flemming. Mad another crucial interception late on. A huge outing for him.
Joel Bagan 9 (star man)
Another one in that back line who really impressed. Marched forward at will with the ball, including one dazzling run that set up an Isaak Davies chance. Put in some huge tackles late on. Defensively immense. Fantastic display.
Ryan Wintle 8
Another who really impressed at the base of the midfield. Always showed for the ball, put in a few physical challenges and kept tempo ticking. Took a booking for a cynical, but much-needed, foul on Hannibal.
Joel Colwill 9
Is starting to look so comfortable in the advanced areas of the pitch. Caused the defence issues with some intricate dribbling. Was in the right place to tap home the opener. Sent another effort just wide in the second half. Brilliant. Looking so mature.
Rubin Colwill 8
Set Robinson up with a pinpoint cross. Looked the most composed out of the attackers with the ball at his feet, trying to engineer openings.
Cian Ashford 8
After a couple of shaky outings he was back to the winger we know he can be. Ran at his full-back and caused issues. Played a big part in setting up Robinson’s goal, too.
Callum Robinson 8
Didn’t have a whole heap of chances, but showed the mark of the man when he swept home a first-time effort from Rubin Colwill’s cross. Three in three for the striker, giving the manager a headache.
Isaak Davies 8
Yet more evidence the forward deserves his spot in the starting lineup. His pace caused the opponents a number of issues. Cut in and drilled one low shot which needed saving by Max Weiss.
Subs
Chris Willock (Davies 62) 8 – Picked up where Davies left off. Set up Joel Colwill for one chance which was steered wide. Great cameo.
Omari Kellyman (R. Colwill 77) 7 – A positive display. Danced around one or two defenders, won a foul, and forced a save directly from a corner!
David Turnbull (J. Colwill 77) 7 – Cardiff needed his composure on the ball when the Clarets were throwing everything at them.
Yousef Salech (Robinson 77) 7 – Got Cardiff up the pitch. Committed some late fouls, but no one minded as the clock ticked on.
Tanatswa Nyakuhwa (Ashford 90) NA
