Three detainees at a federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in Dallas have been shot by a “possible sniper”.

Two of the three victims have died, an ICE spokesperson said. The third person is in hospital.

The three people shot do not include the attacker, who is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The attacker was found dead on the roof of a nearby building, local ABC affiliate WFAA reported, citing sources.

“Preliminary information is a possible sniper,” ICE acting Director Todd Lyons told CNN.

The three people shot do not include the attacker, who is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The field office is where people are processed and where agents decide whether to release individuals or hold them, according to ICE.

The victims were being led into the building to be processed and repatriated, Fox News reported, citing Dallas police Department sources.

The attacker fired multiple rounds from a nearby roof or elevated position near the field office’s secure entryway, an ICE spokesperson said.

It is not clear yet what the suspect’s target was. The shooter struck only detainees, but the spokesperson said it remained unclear whether they were targeting those detainees.

Dallas Police Department said in a statement they responded to a call at around 6.40am local time (12.40pm UK time) in the 8100 block of North Stemmons Freeway.

Two people were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds, and one died at the scene, police said.

Police added that the investigation was ongoing and a media briefing will take place later today.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in an X post that there were multiple injuries and fatalities, and the attacker was dead.

Replying to Noem, US Vice President JD Vance wrote: “The obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop.

“I’m praying for everyone hurt in this attack and for their families.”

No ICE agents were shot or hurt, Sky News’ US partner network NBC reports, and it is unclear what Mr Vance was referring to by “attack on law enforcement”.

Despite the reports that no ICE agents were shot, US Attorney General Ken Paxton said: “We will continue to do everything in our power to combat the alarming increase of targeted attacks against ICE and all law enforcement by evil, twisted individuals.”
