Syria’s president made his debut on the international stage with the first address by a leader from his country to the United Nations General Assembly in more than half a century.

Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former al-Qaeda commander who then lead the group that toppled dictator Bashar al-Assad in December, said Syria had entered a new chapter and could help stabilize the wider Middle East if the international community backed its rehabilitation after almost 15 years of devastating civil war.
