Newcastle Airport’s international terminal is now open for business, unlocking greater opportunities to connect the Hunter with the world.
More than 300 guests and passengers attended the official opening of one of the biggest infrastructure ventures for the region on Thursday 25 September.
The festivities included a RAAF celebratory flyby, Welcome to Country led by Worimi Elder Uncle John and Smoking Ceremony by Uncle Justin Ridgeway, music, a local produce showcase and, of course, formal proceedings featuring CEO Linc Horton, Minister for Defence Industry and Pacific Island Affairs Pat Conroy, Paterson MP Meryl Swanson, Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley, Port Stephens MP Kate Washington MP as well as representatives from Port Stephens Council and City of Newcastle (CN).

The terminal, along with the recently-completed runway works, is estimated to facilitate $12.7 billion in economic activity to the Hunter over the next 20 years, via an additional 850,000 visitors.
It’s also expected to create 4,410 ongoing jobs through new tourism and trade prospects.
The multi-million-dollar project expanded the terminal’s footprint by almost 50% and enhanced the facilities for border services.
It involved construction of a holding area and gates with international/domestic swing capacity, too.
“The upgraded international terminal will mean Newcastle Airport can welcome more passengers through its doors, offering a better, smoother experience for regional travellers and incoming visitors alike,” Acting Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Minister Julie Collins said.
“It’ll open up a world of opportunities for a range of industries by providing the Hunter region direct access to international tourism and freight export markets.”

Mr Conroy was equally-delighted.
“This is a great development for the people of the Hunter,” he said.
“It not only has the potential to connect our region to the world, but it also creates 4,410 ongoing jobs through tourism and trade opportunities.
“The government’s $55 million outlay is an investment in the Hunter’s future.”
Ms Swanson echoed those sentiments.
“The Newcastle International Airport Expansion is proof of what we can achieve with strong investment and a clear vision for regional growth,” she said.
“Years in the making, this is a truly proud moment – not just for me, but for everyone who’s played a part.
“[Today] is the next step in making Newcastle and the Hunter region a global destination… and the continuation of a bright and prosperous future for Paterson.”
International flights will take off from the terminal next month, with Jetstar operating three weekly services to Denpasar Airport in Indonesia.
