Toronto police say a second suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of eight-year-old JahVai Roy, who was killed by a stray bullet inside his home last month.

In a news release, officials say officers responded to reports of gunfire near Martha Eaton Way and Trethewey Drive at around 12:30 a.m. on Aug. 16. Police say Roy was struck inside his residence, rushed to hospital, and later pronounced dead.

The suspects fled the scene before officers arrived.

Investigators previously identified three suspects and announced one arrest.

Following back-to-back judicial authorizations police now reveal a second suspect was taken into custody on Thursday after a search warrant was executed in London, Ont.

The accused, who can no longer be named under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with first-degree murder. Officials say he appeared in court earlier today at 10 a.m.

When asked why all three suspects face first-degree murder charges, at the time, Det.-Sgt. Jason Davis explained investigators believe the shooting was a “planned and premeditated act” even though “the victim may not have been the intended target.”
