Alek Manoah’s time with the Toronto Blue Jays organization has officially come to an end.
The writing was on the wall earlier this week, when the Blue Jays announced that they had DFA’d Manoah to make room on the 40-man roster for Anthony Santander. The 27-year-old had the option to become a free agent if he wasn’t picked up on the waiver wire.
Manoah won’t have to worry about making that decision now, however, as he was scooped up off waivers by the Atlanta Braves this morning.
The #Braves today claimed and optioned RHP Alek Manoah off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta transferred INF Ozzie Albies to the 60-day injured list.

In order to make room for Manoah, the Braves transferred infielder Ozzie Albies to the 60-day injured list. The 28-year-old suffered a season-ending hand fracture earlier in the week.
The Braves clearly believe they can turn Manoah’s once-promising career around. The right-hander was once considered one of the best young pitchers in baseball, posting a 3.22 ERA through 20 starts in his rookie season in 2021.
Manoah was even better in his second MLB season, finishing third in AL Cy Young voting thanks to a superb 2.24 ERA along with 180 strikeouts and a 16-7 record through 31 starts. Unfortunately, things started to fall apart in quick fashion.
Manoah started the 2023 season off horrendously and was eventually optioned to the minors, where he played at several different levels in order to try and regain his old form. He appeared to be finding it with the Jays in 2024, before being forced to undergo Tommy John Surgery in June.
After a lengthy time off, Manoah has been able to get in several minor league starts, including seven with Triple-A Buffalo, during which time he posted a 2.97 ERA. Despite the ERA, however, there were concerns, as he walked 18 batters while averaging just 90.5 mph on his pitches. He also allowed an additional eight unearned runs during that stretch.
Manoah is currently on a one-year contract with a $2.2 million salary, but remains under team control through 2027.
