The Herald understands that Galloway and his wife had arrived into Gatwick on a flight from Abu Dhabi, having travelled from Moscow initially.
Met Police confirmed that a man in his 70s and a woman in her 40s were temporarily detained by counter terrorism officers at Gatwick but have since been allowed to continue with their journeys.
A Met spokesperson said: “We can confirm that on Saturday, 27 September counter terrorism officers at Gatwick Airport stopped a man in his 70s and a woman in her 40s under Schedule 3 of the Counter Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019.
“Neither of them were arrested and they were allowed on their way.”

Schedule 3 to the Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019 allows an examining officer to stop, question, search and detain a person at a port or the border area in the UK and Northern Ireland for the purpose of determining whether the person appears to be a person who is, or has been, engaged in hostile activity.
It also allows for the examination of goods for the purpose of determining whether they have been used in connection with a person’s engagement in hostile activity.
Back in August, Galloway told The Herald he intends to make another political comeback by standing as a candidate in next year’s Scottish Parliament election.
The veteran parliamentarian leads the Workers Party and announced he will be the party’s second candidate on the list in Glasgow.
Speaking exclusively to The Herald following a party summit meeting in Scotland, Mr Galloway said his party plans to contest Glasgow Southside, the seat of Nicola Sturgeon, who is stepping down in May.
Mr Galloway founded the Workers Party of Britain in 2019, have previously led the now defunct Respect Party.
He was a member of the Labour Party until 2003 and had served as an MP across five different constituencies, including Glasgow Hillhead between 1987 and 1997 and Glasgow Kelvin from 1997 to 2005.
He then was elected in the Bethnal Green and Bow constituency in 2005 before losing losing in the 2010 general election. He returned for a three-year stint as MP for Bradford West, winning a by-election with Respect.
The 71-year-old shocked in February 2024 with a by-election with in Rochdale, after he focused his campaign at Muslim voters. He lost the seat at the July 2024 general election.
