We’re cruising at a sedate pace towards some impressive-looking monastic ruins as the sun sparkles on the water and the kids babble happily to each other about the fast-approaching picnic.

“Why did we never come back here?” my brother asks in a tone of bewilderment. In 1994, myself, my brother and our parents holidayed in Co Fermanagh, long before “staycation” was ever a word, and had a wonderful time boating, picking wild strawberries and exploring the tiny islands of Lough Erne.
