A 45-year-old man has been arrested and is assisting police with their investigation.
Detective Inspector Wayne Francis said the man was taken into custody for “other reasons” nearby the shopping centre but is also being questioned in relation to the victim’s death.
Police will be investigating if the pair knew each other, Francis said.
“I’m sure you can appreciate the investigation is still in its infancy, but these are the sorts of inquiries that we’re certainly making,” he said.
The attack on the victim was “brutal and violent”, Francis said.

He would not disclose the nature of his injuries and said police were still trying to notify the man’s family of his death.
“We are aware that the victim does have family and we’re certainly making efforts to contact them because you can imagine the effect it’s going to have on the family once they’re told,” he said.
The victim is local to the area.
Anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident has been urged to come forward.
Police are particularly interested in CCTV/ dashcam footage of anyone walking along Trevally Cres, Radford Rd and Miles Cres between midnight and 3am on Sunday.
“Anyone in that area, if you have footage, particularly cameras that might point out to the road, please let us know,” Francis said.
“We’ve got a large number of detectives, the homicide investigation unit, as well as the Bayside Criminal Investigation Branch, who are actively door knocking in the community, trying to speak to people.
“So people are going to see a lot of police in the area.”
Investigations are ongoing.
