It has been a heated few days at Bethpage Black where the elite of world golf continue to battle it out for Ryder Cup success.

It has been a brilliant couple of days for Team Europe, who are closing in on a first win on U.S soil since 2012; a feat made all the more impressive by the challenges they have faced throughout the action.

The title holders anticipated a hostile atmosphere and so it has proved, with measures such as VR headsets implemented ahead of the competition to prepare the likes of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry for the hostility.

McIlroy had anticipated a ‘heated’ affair and so it has proved, with both him and Lowry facing the brunt of what have been some unsavoury scenes from USA supporters.

The pair put in a performance of the ultimate sporting composure in the face of vitriolic abuse to pad the scoreboard for Europe on Saturday.

Lowry gave it as good as he was getting it back to one fan on while McIlroy has been the chief victim of abuse from raucous fans.

A disgraceful moment.

Slow-mo footage from an alternative angle has also been published online, showing that the beer appears to be slapped from the hand of one spectator by another man alongside him.

The pint then flies directly towards Erica, who is walking alongside the group of fans.

Here’s the full scene as Rory McIlroy’s wife Erica got hit with a beer (glanced off her hat) on Saturday afternoon.

Rory and Lowry had just won on 18 and he was coming back to 17 to cheer on the groups behind — and celebrate with Euro fans.

McIlroy could have the last laugh, with the schedule currently set to give him the opportunity to seal Ryder Cup glory against Scottie Scheffler on Sunday evening.
