A man has died and two people have been hospitalised after a group of swimmers got into trouble at a river north of Perth.

Emergency services were called to the Moore River in Guilderton at 10.45am (12.45pm AEST), where they were told multiple people were in distress in the water.

Bystanders pulled five people from the water.

A 38-year-old man died at the scene despite paramedics’ attempts to save him.

St John Ambulance transported a woman in her 30s and a man in his 40s to hospitals.

They are both now in a stable condition.

Two other swimmers were treated at the scene as young families watched on.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

Guilderton is a tourist town approximately 100km north of Perth.
