Fire crews battled a fire early Wednesday morning that broke out at the old legion building in Ogden.
Crews were called to the former Royal Canadian Legion building at 78th Avenue and Ogden Road S.E. at about 2:45 a.m., said Calgary Fire Department spokesperson Alex Kwan.
The building, which has stood empty for more than a decade, has been slated for demolition since the city ordered it torn down in 2023.
Due to the possibility of asbestos and other hazards, fire crews began fighting the flames defensively with the use of water towers.

“We haven’t been able to go inside,” Kwan said.
He said the fire was contained as of about 6:30 a.m. but 30 firefighters and 11 fire trucks were still working to extinguish the blaze.
The cause of the fire isn’t yet known.
